ROANOKE COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY

GLENVAR BRANCH

Bright and airy library with views of the surrounding mountains

The new Glenvar Branch Library is an exciting addition to the Roanoke County Public Library system. Sited on a highly visible intersection in close proximity to the local schools, the building has become an instant community asset.
The building sits high and proud, taking advantage of the natural topography allowing library patrons to enjoy fabulous views of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains.
The main interior space features a high vaulted wood ceiling with clerestory windows which brings in impeccable natural daylight. The high volume and brightness makes the library feel much larger than you might expect in a 15,000 square foot building. The form, as well as the interior and exterior materials, were selected to reflect a conscious respect of the local history and climate as well as projecting a vision towards the future.
HBM began the process with a site analysis to determine location and orientation of the new building to be constructed on the same site as the existing branch. This community has a large population of active adults where pedestrian and golf cart access were added considerations to vehicular traffic.
