The main library of the St. Petersburg Library System is undergoing a complete interior reconfiguration. Renamed the President Barack Obama Main Library, this mid-century building will be transformed into a modern and flexible public facility, anchored by a new presidential gallery and large meeting room that will support programs and events that promote leadership and entrepreneurship in the next generation while engaging teen users.

The extensive renovations include asbestos abatement, MEP updates, and sitework to address drainage issues. All lighting will be replaced with efficient LED fixtures. After conducting a facilities assessment, it was determined that the floorplan will be completely reconfigured to maximize function, increase popular areas, and add amenities that are not currently available.

An interior axis will be developed to improve visibility and way-finding throughout. From this primary axis, relocated children's and teen area will become easier to find and the path will terminate in the adult and technology areas. A dividable program room has been added to support active children's programming and provide another meeting room option. Staff work areas will be reconfigured for improved functional efficiency and to house the Technical Services department, being relocated to this building.

The incorporation of an afterhours lobby will provide access to the maker space, conference room, existing auditorium, and expanded public restrooms to increase availability of use in the community.

The mezzanine level, held up by the structural stacks, will be converted into a tech loft with computer lab and newly added study rooms. Cost-saving measures include preserving the structural stacks, and where possible, reusing existing furniture. New interior finishes will infuse the space with an airy coastal feel connecting the main library to the historic St. Pete Pier. Finishes will evoke a beach theme reflecting the textures and colors of sand, water, and the structure of the pier.

HBM is currently exploring concepts to refresh and enhance the main entry welcoming those passing by to experience the significant improvements that have been made to the interior of the building.
