SOUTH COUNTY BRANCH
ROANOKE COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY
HBM began working with RCPL in 2006 on a needs assessment, building program, and system-wide site analysis evaluating the potential for constructing new library buildings in order to replace aging facilities that could no longer accommodate the needs of the Library and its customers. Once completed, this information helped the Library select a new location for its main library on a sloped 26 acre site across from an elementary school, adjacent to public athletic fields, and accessible to 1100 miles of pedestrian and bicycle paths via the Blue Ridge Parkway. This connection to nature was important to the Library in the selection of building materials, color palettes, views, and building layout.
Completed in January 2012, this new 54,000 SF facility is more of a cultural center than just a library with over 12,000 SF dedicated to community use with meeting rooms, a 200 seat auditorium, café, bookstore, and special YA community / library room. All of the community spaces including the YA room are accessible after hours.
Investigating community partnerships, the Library also contracted with a local chain of coffee shops to operated a full-service cafe within the main library and a drive-up window to conveniently service customers outside of normal library hours.
Additionally, HBM conducted staff and community input sessions, town hall meetings, and meetings with county officials to build excitement and support for the project. We also developed brochures, presentation materials, and other items for marketing the project.
