SPRING HILL PUBLIC LIBRARY

The Spring Hill Public Library was in the process of considering a new library building to better serve their growing community. Simultaneously, the City was in the process of purchasing a large plot of land containing a former Saturn Automotive operations plant and headquarters building constructed in 1988.

The City is currently engaged in a large adaptive reuse project for the 198,000 SF headquarters building projected to house a Police Station, City Hall, the Spring Hill Public Library, and other tenant spaces including a vocational shop located next door to the library space.

The Spring Hill Library is currently occupying a stand alone building that is too small to meet both current use and projected future growth. By re-purposing 40,000 SF of space, the Library will be able to offer: larger adult and children’s areas; a messy maker room for crafting events that has durable finishes and a slop sink; a technology based maker space with recording studio and editing suite; a technology classroom, study / tutoring rooms for 2-4 person groups; a dedicated teen room; a large flexible multi-purpose meeting room with a flat floor; local history & genealogy room; vending café; and a drive-up book return.

Additional features include space for mobile book displays, small mobile service points, and an outdoor patio / reading garden. The upper floor is currently being built-out to accommodate staff work areas but has an additional 10,000 SF of space available for future expansion.

The open, simple structure lends itself to lower shelving heights and broad sightlines that are ideal for maintaining visibility and allowing light to travel through the space.

Original features of this space that were adapted to library use include a 2-story showroom space and adjacent theater that can become an auditorium for library events. Former training rooms are being renovated into the adult and children’s areas.

We are currently exploring options for an updated exterior skin that can identify the Library as a unique component within the civic campus. This project is currently in the bidding phase.
