WESTLAKE PORTER PUBLIC LIBRARY

Beautiful expansion and renovation focused on a re-imagining of the library

Since the library’s 2002 expansion (designed by Holzheimer and Associates) the City of Westlake has grown in population both in terms of residents and people who come here to work, shop, and generally spend time. This well used facility was due for a refresh that can bring new life into the building while supporting changes in library services, materials, programming, and technology.

The renovation focused on re-imagining high traffic areas, service points, creating a quiet reading area, a new entry experience, and the youth services area. Targeting these key areas gave the Library the most impact on a fixed budget. Phasing the construction work kept the library open with the least amount of disruption to library users.

By re-imagining the entry, HBM was able to infuse new material displays, self-checkout kiosks, and traffic flow in a way that improves customer service, merchandising of materials, and the overall patron experience.

The youth services area renovation included updates to all finishes, incorporating more varied seating types for studying and collaboration, as well as reorganized shelving for better material browsing. A space intended for younger children includes a lively Cleveland skyline themed interactive play area with manipulative elements that support early development of motor skills.

Overall, the designs for updated areas incorporate changes in carpet patterns and wall color to create a hierarchy of space and visual organization for a more intuitive wayfinding.
