HBM Architects is a nationally recognized, award-winning architecture and interior design firm with 50 years of experience designing public buildings across the country. Based in Cleveland, we are known for our deep expertise in public libraries, collaborative design process, and commitment to creating meaningful civic spaces through new construction, renovation, adaptive reuse, and historic preservation.

We are seeking a Project Architect to join our team and provide technical leadership throughout the design and documentation phases of projects. Consistent with the American Institute of Architects’ definition, the Project Architect is responsible for coordinating the development of construction documents, integrating consultant work, and maintaining design and technical quality from concept through construction.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the technical development and coordination of architectural projects

  • Translate design intent into clear, coordinated construction documents

  • Coordinate architectural drawings with engineering consultants and specialty disciplines

  • Ensure compliance with applicable building codes, zoning, and regulatory requirements

  • Participate in design development, detailing, and quality control reviews

  • Support project teams during permitting, bidding, and construction phases

  • Assist with addressing RFIs, submittals, and field issues in collaboration with the Project Manager

Qualifications

  • Professional degree in Architecture (B.Arch or M.Arch)

  • Licensed Architect or actively pursuing licensure preferred

  • 5+ years of professional experience in architectural practice

  • Strong knowledge of building systems, materials, and construction methods

  • Proficiency in Revit and standard architectural software

  • Experience coordinating consultant teams and complex building systems

  • Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills

About the Role

We are seeking a Project Architect / Construction Administrator to join our team and play a key role in the successful delivery of architectural projects from construction documentation through completion. This position emphasizes construction phase services, requiring strong technical knowledge, clear communication skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively with contractors, consultants, and clients.

Working under the direction of a Principal or Project Manager—and consistent with the American Institute of Architects’ professional role definitions—the Project Architect / Construction Administrator is responsible for administering construction contracts, safeguarding design intent, and supporting quality execution in the field.

Key Responsibilities

Construction Administration (Primary Focus)

  • Administer construction contracts in accordance with AIA contract documents

  • Conduct site visits to observe progress, quality, and conformance with the Contract Documents

  • Review shop drawings, submittals, product data, and samples for compliance with design intent

  • Evaluate contractor Requests for Information (RFIs) and prepare architect responses

  • Review and certify contractor applications for payment

  • Prepare and issue Architectural Supplemental Instructions (ASIs) and field reports

  • Evaluate change order requests and assist with cost and schedule impacts

  • Participate in progress meetings and coordinate with contractors, owners, and consultants

  • Assist with punch lists, substantial completion, and project closeout documentation

 

Technical & Project Support

  • Support preparation and coordination of construction documents

  • Assist in maintaining consistency, quality, and accuracy across project drawings and specifications

  • Collaborate with project teams to resolve technical and constructability issues

  • Coordinate with engineering consultants and specialty disciplines as required

 

Qualifications

  • Professional degree in Architecture (B.Arch or M.Arch)

  • Licensed Architect or actively pursuing licensure preferred

  • 5+ years of professional architectural experience, with a strong emphasis on construction administration

  • Demonstrated knowledge of AIA contract documents and standard CA procedures

  • Strong understanding of building systems, materials, codes, and construction methods

  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with clients, contractors, and consultants

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
