Harrell Health Sciences Library

This health information library is at the center of PSU’s Hershey Medical campus voted one of U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals

The renovation of 17,000 SF of existing medical library space with necessary functional upgrading. The renovation consists of re-purposing this area into a flexible, future-proofed library space that also acts as a de-facto student union due to its location on campus. The renovated library enhances the user experience for core groups being served: Medical Students, Faculty, Hospital Clinical Physicians, and the Medical Community at large. Plans included a raised-access floor for ultimate flexibility of power distribution throughout the new space. Collaborative work areas and technology-rich multiple user workstations increase the use of the facility for study groups and other user groups. It is important to the Library that the renovated space be device-blind, able to support any platform and mobile device brought into the space. Phase 2 was completed in November 2016. The Library remained operational during construction using a phased approach.

Additional improvements include:
• A single service point combining Reference, Circulation, and IT Help desk support
• A private office suite for library faculty and staff
• 12 technology rich, flexible study rooms
• Upgraded lighting
• Upgraded technology and electrical infrastructure
• Decreased footprint of on-site print collections to vacate floor space
• Installation of compact shelving
• Deliberately designed quiet study areas
• Both single user and multiple user workstations
• Flexible social areas with a variety of furniture and configurations
