Baltimore County Public Library serves 830,000+ residents of Baltimore County, Maryland through its 19 branches, 4 mobile vehicles, and virtual presence. Just over 428,000 residents, or 52% of the population, have BCPL cards. In FY16, borrowing of the 1.7 million items in the collection exceeded 11 million, 7% of which was downloadable material. The system saw 4.7 million visitors through our facilities’ doors and experienced 5.7 million virtual visits. Inquiries or requests for assistance totaled 1.5 million, of which .5 million were reference questions. Over 600,000 public PC sessions were logged, and users with their own devices launched over 400,000 WiFi sessions.

Baltimore County Public Library has a famed heritage, garnering national recognition from the mid-eighties to early nineties, for its “Give ‘Em What They Want” approach to service. This service philosophy resulted in a high emphasis on customer service, quick turnaround on requests, multiple copies of bestsellers, and a reputation for a stellar collection that grew and resonated with Baltimore County residents. BCPL reached a peak in 2001 when it attained the #2 ranking on Hennen’s Top Ten Libraries serving populations over 500,000. 2010 was the last year the Hennen Ratings were published: BCPL had ranked in the Top Ten status 9 out of the 10 years it was produced.
