GETTYSBURG (MAIN) LIBRARY
ADAMS COUNTY LIBRARY SYSTEM
Goals for the new library building are to provide the features and intangibles limited by the former undersized building that was originally an historic post office. After a site selection and test-fit process in concert with input gathering activities, a direction for the new building was established.
The new building incorporates traditional forms inspired by a combination of the Greek Revival and Colonial forms with Beaux-Art detailing that can be seen in local architecture throughout historic Gettysburg. This traditional foundation is modernized through contemporary material selection for a
clean and approachable exterior design.
Large glass gable forms work together with “lightwell” style elements to provide views into the building and create natural light-filled interior. The other building forms are designed with punched openings tying back to the historic influence of the area. The building entry is topped with a strong capital, supported by a colonnade, and backed with expansive windows. A covered and colonnaded patio extends from the West façade leading to an outdoor amphitheater providing needed outdoor gathering space.
The interior has been designed with inherent flexibility, staff efficiency, and an open layout promoting visibility and accessibility. As a main library, this building will also house system-wide services and administrative functions.
