STARK LIBRARY

HBM Architects has proudly partnered with Stark Library for more than 25 years, working together on the transformative Re|Imagine campaign. What began most recently with the new Jackson Township Branch and several branch renovations now centers on the flagship Main Library. This new facility is designed to embody the library’s mission of advancing literacy, connecting communities, and fostering exploration.
Positioned as a gateway to downtown Canton, the Main Library will serve as an anchor for the redevelopment of the Court Avenue district. Focused on connectivity, the design extends into a central green space that links the library to the new Operations Center, creating a dynamic civic campus. An internal central community stairway connects indoor reading areas with outdoor terraces and surrounding greenery, encouraging movement and engagement throughout the site. The building’s warm, welcoming atmosphere is supported by mass timber construction, which also reinforces the project’s sustainability goals.
The exterior design reflects the architectural character of Canton while introducing a modern identity. Drawing inspiration from the turn-of-the-century Market Avenue aesthetic, the facade’s scale and rhythm promote visibility and integration with the cityscape. A distinctive angled entrance invites the community in, highlighting the library’s role as a cultural and civic destination.
Located on the historic site of President William McKinley’s former home, the library honors his legacy through meaningful design elements. Landscape features and architectural details echo McKinley’s iconic front porch speeches, connecting his history with the library’s mission of inspiration and access to knowledge. The design also acknowledges the nearby McKinley School, complementing its architectural rhythm and character.
