HBM Architects has a long history of collaboration with the Tuscarawas County Public Library beginning with an expansion project circa 1989. In 2018 we continued our relationship with TCPL to develop a design that would renovate the entire main level, restrooms, create a small addition, and allow the library to transition to a more progressive service model on a limited budget.

The library's changing service model involves the removal of a circulation desk and replacing fixed desks with mobile service points for the adult and children's areas (that fit in the elevator) for support during peak usage times. A new garage and workroom for the mobile services department is to be constructed on an adjacent site that allows us to repurpose the former garage into a new main entry. The addition allows a reorganization of all staff areas for flexibility, improved work flow, and efficiency. By relocating the staff work areas, more of the historic space in the original building can be given back to public use.

The library's downtown location has become a hot spot for hosting a variety of events both inside the building, and outside on the site. Creating flexible space is paramount to accommodating large events without devoting limited resources and space to a defined meeting room. Therefore, a portion of the main area will be outfitted with mobile shelving and furniture that can be reconfigured and removed to accommodate large groups.

This is also the first TCPL that offers drive-up services and after-hours lockers for 24/7 material pick-up. Both features are greatly in demand by this community. The parking lot now offers more ADA parking spaces without losing other parking spots. Site improvements include new poles in the parking lot that provide both lighting and access to power for outdoor events, food trucks, etc.

The vision for this project came from years of open collaboration between HBM and TCPL but also between TCPL's staff and administration. They took the time to see a variety of libraries and share photos, notes, things they liked, disliked, or inspire a new idea.
