PUSKARICH PUBLIC LIBRARY
The Puskarich Public Library building was constructed in 1986 and designed as a traditional library serving a rural community while also housing a coal museum and auditorium space. The building had not been renovated since opening and was in need of a new layout, refreshed interior spaces, improved ADA accessibly, and the inherent flexibility that could better support the changing needs of this community over the next 30 years.
This budget conscious renovation was focused on creating dual-purpose spaces throughout the main level of the library. This level has been completely refreshed and features new components like a local history / maker room with scanners, VHS conversion equipment, and supporting software. Next to this area is another collaborative maker space that is defined by moveable furniture which can be used to connect or separate this area from the adjacent teen space. An acoustically treated study room in the teen area can also double as a recording studio.
The children’s area has been relocated into the larger wing of the building allowing the children’s department the flexibility and space needed to conduct their programs within. Interactive manipulative elements, reading nooks, and window seats have also been added to this space.
Minor modifications were made to the lower level where the coal museum and meeting rooms are located. These updates were focused on increasing ADA compliant access within this level and to the building from the lower level parking lot. The building exterior has been enhanced with storefront glass bringing more natural light into the building, a new entrance, updated building frontage to the main road, and new signage. Access was created for a future patio to be used for outdoor programs.
