WEST GARLAND LIBRARY

GARLAND LIBRARY

The new library is a grand beacon set within Hollabaugh Park that connects into paths leading to the park itself and adjacent community recreation center. The entry experience features a central volume of colored glass that reflects onto the floor and walls of this space like a kaleidoscope. These blues, greens, and coral colors are further used throughout the interior to guide patrons to the adult area, teen and children’s area, or large meeting room from this main spine.

A highly visible maker space is located adjacent to study rooms and teen space to showcase library programs and technology available and options for quiet space. The Curiosity Cove within the children’s area is an immersive experience with interactive play elements where children’s creativity is sparked while entering a tree or reading a book below a ceiling oculus illuminated with fish or butterflies. The nature theme is in enhanced with bolder colors and whimsical critters adorning the walls. The moveable glass wall that separates the youth program room from the children’s area allows for flexibility in program size and maximizes the experience of play and discovery from within the Play, Learn and Grow space of this department.

Outdoor patios and an art plaza featuring colorful landscape stones are accessible from the meeting room and adult area and another from the children’s area providing opportunities for outdoor programming, reading areas, and creating a visual connection with the surrounding recreational campus. Drive-up services feed into the staff workroom with materials going into the AMH system and a service window for pick-ups.
